KEY STAGE 3

In English, students follow National Curriculum Programmes of Study for speaking and listening, reading and writing.  Progress is continually monitored by subject teachers. An integrated course in English and literature is taught, which aims to develop students’ abilities to communicate effectively in speech and writing and to read with understanding, enabling them to become enthusiastic, responsive andknowledgeable readers.


KEY STAGE 4

Students study either GCSE English OR a combined course where they study GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. These courses develop our students’ ability to:

  • Speak and write effectively and accurately for a number of audiences;
  • Read, discuss and respond to a range of classic and contemporary texts, including prose, drama and poetry


Students complete a range of units and some examples of these are listed below:

  • Exploring Modern Texts 
  • Poetry Across Time
  • Approaching Shakespeare and the English Literary Heritage
  • Understanding and Producing Non-Fiction Texts
  • Speaking and Listening
  • Understanding and Producing Creative Texts
