Vocational Learning

These courses are designed to give students an insight into aspects of working life. The courses are flexible and the content is tailored to the interests of the students and to the skills that will serve them well in the future.

There are opportunities to develop practical skills outside the classroom as well as meet people from business.  Visits to other centres of learning and local businesses enable students to see the skills in action.

NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Health, Beauty & Wellbeing

NCFE Certificate in Health, Beauty & Wellbeing course is designed to give an insight into the vocational area of the hair and beauty industry.  The course is taught within Seaton Burns very own realistic learning environment Sparkle @ SeatonSalon.  During practical sessions students will gain skills in various treatments and services.  Both theory and practical will be taught for each of the units outlined below this includes a unit on personal health & wellbeing which will ultimately enhance confidence and self esteem.  This course will be taught alongside the IGCSE Enterprise in which the students will set up and run an enterprise using the skills they gain at the Salon

Students complete the following units

Unit 1 - Introduction to the Health, Hair & Beauty Industry

This unit develops an understanding of the industry, health & safety within a salon environment and the importance of physical health and personal appearance within the health and beauty industry.

Unit 2 - Reception & Business Skills (incorporating the IGCSE Enterprise)

This unit will develop the skills needed in the salon receptionist role, communication skills, raising funds for the salon/events and the importance of customer service.

Unit 3 - Beauty & Hair Care

This unit covers basic anatomy & physiology, facials, manicures, nail art, make up, hair care and grooming and styling of hair and will develop practical skills for each of these areas.

Unit 4 - Personal Emotional Wellbeing (Physical & emotional health)

This unit develops an understanding of the importance of exercise for health, good nutrition, stress management, relaxation, sleep patterns and general wellbeing.

Students develop the following skills:

  • Practical skills - various hair and beauty treatment/services, time management, personal organisation and action planning.
  • Presentational skills - working with clients and peers conducting treatments, running the salon reception area and using a variety of media and forms to address an audience
  • Personal skills - showing evidence of progression
  • Interpersonal skills - Communication with clients, peers and working within a team.
  • Cognitive skills - reflection and review of own and others performances

 

CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Child Care and Education

This qualification develops the skills and knowledge needed to work under supervision with children and their families in a variety of settings.  These could include nurseries, children’s centres or pre-schools.

At Seaton Burn, students will complete the following units:

Unit 1 –An Introduction to working with children

Unit 2 – The Developing Child

Unit 3 – Safe, healthy and nurturing environments for children

Unit 4 – Children and Play

Unit 5 – Communication and professional skills within child care and education.

 

Students develop the following skills:

  • Practical skills – design of developmental activities for children, time management, personal organisation and action planning.
  • Presentational skills - working with placements staff, teachers and children and using a variety of media and forms to address an audience
  • Personal skills - showing evidence of progression
  • Interpersonal skills - Communication with teaching staff, placement staff, peers and younger children.
  • Cognitive skills - reflection and review of own and others performances

Horticulture (IGCSE Enterprise)

This course provides you with the essential skills to successfully look after your own allotment space and grow your own food. You will also have the opportunity to work with chickens and ducks! We will also spend plenty of time in the College ‘nature reserve’ to learn about the flora and fauna that live in our local area, to hone our basic bushcraft skills and to take part in a number of conservation activities.

Throughout the course we will run our own business, selling what we grow to the local community.

Students study:

  • Feeding and weeding
  • Hedgerow harvesting
  • Animal husbandry – chickens
  • Identification of plants and animals
  • Conserving the habitat for the benefit of those plants and animals
  • Basic bushcraft skills
  • Setting up a small business
  • Selling food for free
  • Growing produce to sell
  • Marketing your business
  • Profit and loss
  • Presenting a business plan
